Rust Respawn Times

How ore nodes, barrels and crates come back after you farm them, where sulfur spawns most, and what map size and player count change. For what each node gives, see Resource Nodes; for drop tables, Loot Containers.

No ore type goes over its share of a region. A mined node comes back at a new random spot in the same region as a type below its share, picked by how many places each type is short. A full region keeps a few spare places (up to 3 on our test maps), so it is not always the type you mined. Stone left standing never blocks sulfur, and mining stone never lifts sulfur above its share. A part-mined node keeps its place until it breaks.

Nodes per km² of land in each biome. The terrain of each map moves these numbers. Nodes spawn only on rocky ground and the sides of cliffs, never on beaches, the shore, monuments, roads, rivers, lakes and rail lines.

Monuments with their own nodes

MonumentNodes that respawnRefill every (min)
Airfield530 to 37

Tropical Island340 to 60

These nodes sit on fixed spots and refill on the monument's own clock, not the 60 second refill. Nodes that never respawn are on each monument's page.

Share of node spots where the spawn check passed. It never passed on a foundation and always passed with one centred 3 m away or more, so a node can spawn on open ground right beside a base. A Large Wood Box never blocked it, even on the spot. Tool Cupboard range is not part of the check.

Only the fixed crate, barrel and node spots inside monuments speed up: above 150 players, up to 4× at 300. Ore nodes, loose pickups, junk piles and the barrels scattered around monuments refill the same at any player count.

Each crate or barrel group of a monument tops up on its own clock, a few at a time, until it is full. Looting does not restart the clock. A crate leaves only when emptied, a barrel when broken; one left half looted keeps its spot. The next one goes to any free spot, never one with a player within 2 m.

Crates and barrels that nobody empties

A container that stands untouched, or half looted, swaps its loot for a fresh roll on this timer.

Roadside junk piles

A junk pile lasts
30 min
give or take 30 s
Held by a player within
15 m
Sinks once any loot is taken, after
50 to 105 s
with nobody within 15 m

A junk pile's barrels and crates sink with it. A new pile then spawns at a random roadside on the next refill.

Rust respawns: common questions

How long do nodes take to respawn in Rust?
A mined node does not come back in place. Every 60 seconds the game adds back the missing nodes of each ore group, up to 100 per group, at new random spots in the group's biomes. In a test, 200 ore nodes taken off the map were all back after 100 seconds.
If I mine stone nodes, will sulfur nodes spawn instead?
Not beyond sulfur's share. Each region has a fixed share of sulfur, metal and stone nodes, and no type goes over its share. A mined node comes back somewhere in the same biomes as a type below its share, picked by how many places each type is short. A full region still has a few spare places (up to 3 on our test maps), so the new node is not always the type you mined. Stone nodes left standing do not stop sulfur nodes from spawning.
Where is the best place to farm sulfur in Rust?
Arctic and Arid ore nodes are 33% sulfur; Jungle, Temperate and Tundra ore nodes are 25% sulfur. On our test maps Arctic had the most sulfur nodes, 131 per km² of land.
Where do HQM nodes spawn?
In every biome, but most in the jungle: 27 per km² of land on our test maps, against 4 or fewer elsewhere.
Can ore nodes spawn inside my base?
Not on a foundation: 0% of spawn checks passed where one stood. With a foundation centred 3 m away or more, every check passed, so a node can spawn on open ground right beside a base. Tool Cupboard range is not part of the check. A Large Wood Box did not block it, even right on the spot.
Does player count change respawn times in Rust?
Ore nodes, loose pickups, junk piles and the barrels scattered around monuments refill the same at any player count. The fixed crate, barrel and node spots inside monuments respawn faster with more than 150 players online, up to 4 times faster at 300 players.
How long do monument crates take to respawn?
Each crate and barrel group of a monument tops up on its own clock, a few at a time, until it is full. At most monuments crates refill every 30 to 37 minutes and barrels every 20 to 30. Looting does not restart the clock, so an emptied crate comes back on a later tick, not on a timer of its own. A crate left half looted keeps its spot, and no crate spawns on a spot with a player within 2 m.
How long do junk piles last?
About 30 minutes if nobody loots it, and it waits while a player is within 15 m. Once any of its loot is taken, it sinks 50 to 105 seconds later with nobody that close. Its barrels and crates go with it, and a new pile spawns at a random roadside.

Methodology

Tested in game on our own server: the ore mix and the nodes in each biome on 3 maps of 4,000 m, spawn checks at 75 node spots beside a foundation and a Large Wood Box, how fast 200 removed ore nodes came back, the spawn timers of every monument, and the loot timer of every container on a live map. Counts change with the terrain of each map, and a server can change the settings. Tested on the current version of Rust.
