Rust Radiation
How radiation works, how strong it is at each of the 14 monuments that have it, and what to wear.
How radiation works
- Dose
- Each monument radiation zone has a dose: the rads a second you take at its centre with nothing on. A monument can have several zones, and the strongest one sets what you need.
- Protection
- In a monument zone, the radiation protection of everything you wear adds up and comes off the dose. The game counts 50% at most, so a zone above 50 rads a second always lets some through.
- Taking it off
- Pills, rad removal teas, medkits and some food take radiation off what you have taken in. What takes radiation off lists each one.
- Deep Sea
- Over the last 5 minutes before the Deep Sea closes, radiation builds up across all of it, Ghost Ship, Tropical Island and Floating City included. Clothing does not stop it.

What to wear at each monument
strongest zoneThe piece is the one a player can craft that takes the fewest body parts and stops all it can. Each monument page lists more clothing, with what each piece lets through.

Tested in game on our own server: the dose of every radiation zone at every monument, how worn protection comes off it, the most protection the game counts, and how much each item takes off. Tested on the current version of Rust.
Rust radiation: common questions
- How does radiation work in Rust?
- Each monument radiation zone has a dose in rads a second. The radiation protection of everything you wear adds up and comes off that dose. The game counts 50% protection at most. Clothing does not stop the radiation that builds up before the Deep Sea closes.
- Where is the strongest radiation in Rust?
- Missile Silo, at 80 rads a second with nothing on. The game counts 50% protection at most, so 30 rads a second always get through there.
- How much radiation protection do you need?
- A Minimal zone needs 2%, a Low zone 10% and a Medium zone 25%. High zones (51 and 80 rads a second) are stronger than the 50% the game counts, so some always gets through.
- What cheap clothes stop radiation?
- The cheap full kit: Snow Jacket, Miners Hat, Pants, Wood Armor Pants and Leather Gloves, 39% in all, made at workbench level 1 or lower. It stops every Minimal, Low and Medium monument zone.
- What removes radiation in Rust?
- Anti-Radiation Pills 75, Large Medkit 20, Jar of Honey 15, Medical Syringe 10, Pure Rad. Removal Tea 10, Advanced Rad. Removal Tea 8, Rad. Removal Tea 6, Medical Honey Bandage 5 and Water 5. Each takes that much off the radiation you have taken in.
