Your clones

Type the 6 gene letters of each clone and press Enter, paste a list, or read them from your screen. Letters: G growth, Y yield, H hardiness, W water, X empty.

Share your Rust window, then drag a box around the six gene letters. The image stays in your browser.

What do you want to breed?

Genes count in any order: YYYYGG and GYGYYY grow the same.

Rust genetics: common questions

What are the best genes in Rust?
A god clone has six green genes and no red ones. Common targets are YYYGGG, YYYYGG and GGGGYY: Y raises the yield and G makes the plant grow faster.
How does crossbreeding work in Rust?
Each of the 6 gene slots is decided on its own. The game adds up each gene's weight across the neighbouring plants, and a gene only replaces the centre plant's gene if its total is higher. Red genes weigh 1, green genes 0.6.
How many plants does it take to beat a red gene?
Two matching green genes. 0.6 + 0.6 = 1.2, which beats one red gene at 1. One green gene alone never does.
Where do I put the plant I want to improve?
In the centre of a large planter. It has 8 neighbours, the most of any slot, so it gets the most genes from the plants around it.
Do different plants crossbreed with each other?
No. Hemp, berries, corn and the other plants use the same gene system, but a plant only crossbreeds with its own type.
