How many Rust players are banned?
We checked the Steam ban records of 200,000 Rust accounts. How many carry a game ban, how many VAC, how many new bans arrive each week, and why your server looks cleaner than the numbers.

Out of 100 accounts
Everyone in Rust has a story about the player who tapped them through a wall. We wanted a number instead of a story. So we took a random sample of 199,806 Rust accounts and read the public Steam ban record of each one in October 2026.
About 1 in 6 accounts carries a game ban: 16.4%. When Rust's anti-cheat bans an account, Steam shows it as a game ban, so this is the number most players mean when they ask how many people are banned. Steam does not say which game issued a ban, so some of these come from other games: further down we estimate that at most about 14% carry a Rust ban. 2.0% of accounts carry two or more.
Remember that these are accounts, not people. A Rust ban is permanent, so a banned player who comes back has to buy the game again on another account. One person can sit behind several of these accounts.
It depends where you look
The share changes a lot with where an account plays. Split by where each account plays, the cleanest group had 10.5% game-banned accounts. The worst had 22.8%, more than twice as many.
The vanilla group sits lowest, at 10.5%. The training group (19.2%) and every modded group sit higher, up to 22.8%. There is only one vanilla group, and other differences between communities could explain the gap, so server type may not be the cause.
Nine groups is a small set, and many accounts appear in several, so read this as a pattern, not a rule.
- Group AVanilla10.5%
- Group BModded13.1%
- Group CModded14.9%
- Group DMixed15.1%
- Group EModded16.3%
- Group FModded17.8%
- Group GModded18.3%
- Group HTraining19.2%

Why your server looks cleaner
If 1 in 6 accounts is banned, why doesn't every group of six players hold a cheater? Because a Rust ban permanently locks the account out of nearly every Rust server. Long-term records keep every account that ever played. A live server holds only the people who can still join it.
We read the Steam record of about 9,000 players from one busy server's last two wipes. 5.4% carried a game ban, about a third of the long-term rate.
The ban dates tell the rest. 2.9% of these players had a game ban from before their wipe began. A Rust ban would have kept them off the server, so those bans came from other games. The other 2.4% were banned after their wipe began.
New bans keep coming
Bans don't stop. We took 101,562 accounts with no game ban at a check in May or June and followed them to October 2026. Every week, about 1 in every 1,000 of them picked up a game ban.
Most weeks sit close to 1 in 1,000, and every one of the 21 weeks we watched brought new bans. This rate covers every clean account, not only cheaters, so it is not the odds of a ban for someone who cheats. And a ban can land long after the cheating that earned it, so an account with no ban yet is not in the clear.

VAC bans or game bans?
A VAC ban comes from Valve's own anti-cheat, the one Counter-Strike uses. A game ban comes from the game's developer. 5.8% of Rust accounts carry a VAC ban, and 1.3% carry both kinds.
New VAC bans barely move. In the same 4 months, at most 8 of 112,298 clean accounts picked one up, against 1,824 new game bans. When an account in our sample got banned in those months, it was almost always a game ban. To check one player, use the ban lookup.
Methodology
We drew a random sample of 200,000 accounts from a larger set of accounts seen playing Rust, and read the public Steam ban record of each in October 2026: VAC bans, game bans, community bans and the days since the most recent ban. 199,806 accounts still existed.
A game ban counts any game ban on the account. Steam does not say which game issued it. Shares are of accounts, not people. The 95% range for the game-ban share is 16.2% to 16.6%. The new-ban rate covers accounts with no game ban at an earlier check whose ban data we could confirm, and counts only bans dated after that check. Weekly rates divide each week's new bans by the clean accounts watched that week. The yearly rate assumes the same pace all year.
The live-server figures cover about 9,000 players from one busy server's last two wipes, read in October 2026. A ban counts as from before the wipe when its date is earlier than the wipe's start.
