Farming & Food System

Crop genetics, composters, planters, and food production in Rust.

01Farming Basics

Farming in Rust allows you to grow food, cloth (Hemp), and tea ingredients. Plants can be grown in Planters (Small or Large) placed inside or near your base. Each plant needs: Water (rain, manual watering, or sprinkler system), Light (sun or Ceiling Lights), and fertile ground quality.

Plants go through growth stages: Seed → Seedling → Sapling → Crossbreed → Mature → Fruit. Harvesting at the Mature or Fruit stage gives you the crop plus clones (seeds) for replanting.

02Genetics System

Every plant has a 6-gene sequence made of letters:

G (Growth Speed) — Faster growing Y (Yield) — More output per harvest H (Hardiness) — More resistant to harsh conditions W (Water Need) — Needs less water X (Empty/Null) — No benefit, wastes a gene slot

The perfect plant has GGGYYY or YYYYYY depending on your goal. Crossbreeding is achieved by placing plants next to each other in planters — neighboring plants influence each other's genes during the Crossbreed stage.

Pro Tips
  • Aim for YYYYYY on hemp for maximum cloth production
  • GGGYYY is optimal for food/berries (fast growth + high yield)
  • Always remove plants with X genes before the crossbreed stage
  • Use our Genetics Breeder tool (/tools/genetics) to plan crossbreeds
  • Large planters hold 9 plants, small planters hold 4

03Teas

Berries can be combined in a Mixing Table to create Teas with powerful temporary effects. Each tea has 3 quality tiers: Basic, Advanced, and Pure.

Tea types and their max (Pure) effects:

TeaDurationEffect (Pure Tier)
Ore Tea30 min+50% ore mining yield
Wood Tea30 min+50% wood gathering yield
Scrap Tea30 min+50% Scrap from barrels/crates
Max Health Tea30 min+25 max health (125 total)
Anti-Rad Tea30 minRadiation immunity
Healing TeaInstantHeals 25 HP instantly
Pro Tips
  • Pure teas require 4 matching berries of specific colors in the Mixing Table
  • Ore Tea is the most impactful for progression — 50% more sulfur/metal per run
  • Stack healing teas for a cheap alternative to Medical Syringes

04Food & Hunger

Hunger and thirst drain constantly. Hunger drains at ~0.03/sec (slow), thirst at ~0.04/sec. Below 40 hunger you start losing health; at 0 you die quickly.

Best food sources: - Pumpkin: 100 calories + 30 hydration (farmable) - Corn: 75 calories + 20 hydration (farmable) - Cooked Meat: 100-200 calories depending on type - Canned Tuna/Beans: Found in crates, good emergency food - Chocolate/Granola Bar: Found in crates, decent calories

Pro Tips
  • Pumpkins are the best all-around food — grow them in large planters
  • Always cook meat — raw meat can cause food poisoning
  • Burnt meat has fewer calories but won't make you sick
  • Water Jugs can be filled at rivers, water catchers, or water purifiers
