(4)How the Rust Tech Tree Works
The Rust tech tree is a structured progression system that determines which items you can craft at each workbench tier. To unlock a blueprint, you need to spend scrap at a research table or follow connected paths in the tech tree at your workbench. Each workbench tier gates access to increasingly powerful items -- Workbench Level 1 covers early-game essentials like the revolver, crossbow, and basic armor, while Workbench Level 3 unlocks end-game weapons like the AK-47, Bolt Action Rifle, and C4.
The tech tree uses a branching path system where unlocking one item may give access to research the next item in the chain at a reduced cost. Planning your research path carefully can save hundreds of scrap, especially in the early wipe when resources are scarce.
Optimal Research Strategy
For the most efficient wipe progression, prioritize items that enable you to snowball. At Tier 1, rush the crossbow, code lock, and sheet metal door for base security. The satchel charge (125 scrap) is expensive but opens up raiding potential early. At Tier 2, the semi-auto rifle and garage door should be top priorities -- they provide the biggest combat and base defense upgrades for their scrap cost.
At Tier 3, focus on one primary weapon first (typically the AK-47 or LR-300) before branching into explosives. The rocket launcher and C4 are essential for end-game raiding but cost 500 scrap each, so plan your scrap farming accordingly. Running monuments like Launch Site and Military Tunnels is the fastest way to accumulate the scrap needed for Tier 3 research.
Workbench Costs Breakdown
Building a Workbench Level 1 costs 50 scrap and unlocks Tier 1 crafting. Workbench Level 2 requires 500 scrap and a Level 1 workbench to upgrade, while Workbench Level 3 costs 1,250 scrap plus a Level 2 workbench. In total, reaching Workbench Level 3 costs 1,800 scrap just for the workbenches alone -- before any blueprint research. Combined with research costs, a full Tier 3 loadout can easily exceed 5,000 scrap, making efficient farming and monument runs critical for competitive wipe progression.
